- 1918 United States congress addressed flooding with a congressional 1936 flood control act giving the Corp of Engineers the ability to help with flood project's
- Great 1937 flood
- Congress passed the 1936 Flood Control Act, one of the most important events in the history of the Corps of Engineers. For the first time, Congress declared that flood control was a proper activity of the federal government, the act specified the obligations that would have to be assumed by local interests before the Corps could begin certain projects.
- Flood control was under created war powers act for national security
- Taylorsville in the 1940s forms The Spencer County Kentucky Levee Flood Control and Drainage District No 1 levee under the KRS 268 levee district
- Taylorsville residents (O L Watson, Tom Watsons father) go to Washington to lobby for levee to protect Taylorsville
- Taylorsville in the 1940s starts the formation and in 1947 officaly created The Spencer County Kentucky Levee Flood Control and Drainage District No 1 levee under the KRS 268 levee district
Levee Facts:
- Levee cost about $400,000 to build
- The levee district uses bonds to raise $75,000 needed, as their part of the project
- Taylorsville suffered heavy flood damage in 1935, 1937, 1939, 1943 and 1945, which prompted the need for the levee.
- Construction began: April, 1948
- Construction complete: March, 1949
- Value of property in area protected by levee, in Sept. 1947, $2,083,000.
